CalPERS MANAGER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

CalPERS, the largest U.S. public pension fund, has a history of being in the forefront of the institutional investment industry. The CalPERS Manager Development Program (MDP) managed by Strategic is designed to help start-up and emerging investment firms transition into significant institutional money managers. In exchange for an equity stake in the partner firm, the program provides investment assets and equity capital, as well as management guidance and support.

Strategic Investment Group, with a long history of incubating money managers, offers to all selected firms our insights and perspectives across a broad array of marketing issues, including brand development, product development and positioning, evaluating distribution channels, conferences, media and the web. MDP presents a unique opportunity for emerging managers seeking to establish institutional credibility and achieve the critical mass required for sustained profitability.

Under MDP I, which was established in 2000, Strategic was hired with the assignment of building out a $2 billion emerging manager portfolio. Strategic and CalPERS made investments in eight emerging firms under that program. While the investment period for MDP I has ended, Strategic was hired in June 2006 to manage MDP II, which will follow a similar investment program to MDP I, except it will have an open-ended investment period and a broader investment mandate.
