The Euro Zone: Breaking Up Is Hard To Do June 2010 A year ago, many thought that the euro was on its way to deposing the dollar as the preeminent reserve currency. Too much debt made the dollar a bad long-run bet. Now, in the wake of the Greek crisis, the very integrity of the euro area is in doubt, and the dollar is once again seen as a safe (or safer) haven. But the euro is not necessarily destined for the burial ground for failed experiments, because as hard as it will be for the euro to survive the present turmoil, dissolving the currency union could be even more problematic. |
